Type II diabetes has reached epidemic proportions among Native Americans and Alaskan Natives, and it is a growing diagnosis among Native youth. What often accompanies a diagnosis of Type II diabetes is kidney failure, foot problems including amputations, and blindness. Fortunately with diabetes, knowledge and education about the disease is powerful medicine. Some symptoms can even be controlled by choosing a healthy lifestyle and by making health choices.
Nellie McConville is doing her part to help her community by sharing the valuable teachings of exemplary role models who have successfully managed their Type II diabetes. She offers these teachings so we in turn can learn to make healthy lifestyle choices throughout every aspect of our lives. These lessons guide us in making better decisions about our health through exercise, following a diet of wholesome food, engaging our spiritual practices, and more.
